Promotion Tests
In karate, belt rank is a recognition of progress. When a student starts, s/he holds a white belt rank. Promotion tests review progression to the next rank. The screening process is careful to select those participants who possess the necessary skills to pass the test. The order of rank is: white, yellow, green, purple, brown and black. There is a ranking of stripe belts for white and a high belt ranking for yellow through brown. The requirements become more difficult as one rises in rank and the period between promotion increases. Factors associated with test taking include focus (both physically and mentally), speed, power, precision, respect, and maturity. While the requirements for a rank of yellow belt may include strong forms and take some months, a rank of purple and brown requires a higher level of focus and maturity, and students are expected to be able to teach new students and be good role models.
You can expect that most adult beginners initially will take three tests in a 12-month period. The more time and energy committed to the practice of the Art, the faster the enhancement of your skills and progress. You will be scheduled for a test when the instructor observes your readiness. Always direct any related questions to your instructor.
Our end-of-year Demonstration and Promotion Test is on Tuesday June 7th at 5:30 pm. The test is at the Trevor Day School Gym, 1 West 88th Street, New York, NY. Click here to sign up for this event.
